12 Sustainability Commitment

This section covers public statements from your school or department that describes their commitment to teaching low-energy building in hopes of minimizing climate change.

For this section, you must include:

  • A list of instances in which these commitments have been communicated to the public (Ex. speeches, meetings, or newsletters)
  • 100-word abstract that describe these statements and include names, locations, and time periods.
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link to sample evidence such as pictures and documents of these statements.

11 Facility Management

This section is about how your school’s management is set up and how it involves low-energy design and energy reduction practices. This section will be split up into four parts:

Laboratory

Designated educational labs/workshops that incorporate low-energy design. 

  • Each award counts for six credits with a possibility of 12 credits overall.

For each section, you must submit:

  • Name of lab
  • Location of lab
  • A publicly accessible and viewable link to:
    • Syllabus of the course using the laboratory.
    • A minimum of five photos of the lab
  • 100-word abstract of this laboratory with a description of its space and its equipment.

Sustainable Operations

Department/College/School/University’s advertised facility management practices that reduce energy consumption. 

  • Each effort counts for four credits with a possibility of 12 credits overall

For this section, you must submit:

  • Name of sustainable operations
  • Name of what office has implemented this practice
  • 100-word abstract of this practice with a description of how it benefits the university and incorporates lowering energy consumption.
  • 100-word abstract of this laboratory with a description of its space and its equipment.
  • Name of contact who can give additional information that is needed.

Action Plans

Your University’s published action plan(s) aimed at accomplishing a clear and significant energy use reduction of their facilities.

  • Each published action plan is worth six credits for a total of 12 credits overall.

For this submission you must include:

  • Name of action plan
  • Name of facilitator in charge of the action plan
  • 100-word abstract that identifies names, locations, and time periods of action plan
  • A publicly accessible and viewable link a piece of sample evidence, such as images or other documents that illustrate the activities. 

Personnel

Any employee at the institution’s school/department whose job description includes activities that reduce energy consumption.

  • Each employee is equivalent to 6 credits with a possibility of 12 credits overall.

For this submission you must include

  • Name of faculty/staff
  • Job title
  • 100-word abstract that describes the job’s responsibilities and identifies names, locations, and time periods.
  • A publicly accessible and viewable link a piece of sample evidence, such as images or other documents that illustrate the job activities. 

10 Integrated Activities

This section is about the work by employees in partnership with students at your school/department to create accomplishments in the reduction of energy consumption.

  • Each activity counts for three credits with a possibility of nine credits overall.

For this section, you must include:

  • Project name
  • Faculty and student leaders
  • 100-word abstract that describes this program and identifies names, locations, time periods, and benefits
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that documents sample evidence for this project.

9 Student Outreach

This section is about your student body and their efforts in the reduction of energy consumption. We will split their efforts into three sections:

Student Organizations

A student sustainability group or organization whose goals include the reduction of energy consumption.

  • Each organization counts for three credits with a possibility of nine credits overall.

For this section, you must submit:

  • Name of student organization
  • Name of organization leaders (ex. president(s), executive board members, etc.)
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that holds a charter or organizing document which states that the purpose of the organization includes low energy design.

Student Activities

  1. A measurable amount of work by students at the institution’s school/department that results in a reduction of energy consumption. 

Only students other than those in the student organization(s) described can be used for this section

  • Each activity counts for three credits with a possibility of nine credits overall.

For this section, you must submit:

  • Name of student
  • Name of activity
  • 100-word abstract describing the activity with names, locations, time periods, and benefits
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that holds sample evidence of this activity and its benefits.

Student Awards

Students who have received awards or other recognition for their work in reduction of energy consumption in the present or future sense. 

  • Each award counts for three credits with a possibility of nine credits overall.

For this section, you must submit:

  • Name of student
  • Name of award
  • 100-word abstract describing the accomplishment 
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that holds the award announcement.

8 Staff and Faculty Programs

This section kicks off the second half of the BEEnow Certification that covers the full scope and range of efforts related to administrative initiatives, facility management, and your institution’s sustainability commitment in Built Environment Education with an emphasis on the reduction of energy consumption and low energy design.

For this section, you will submit a measurable amount of service or committee work by faculty or staff performed to convert inputs of service into outputs of accomplishments regarding the reduction of energy consumption by their department.

Ex: A university program with representatives from the faculty that has a direct impact on occupant behavior towards energy reduction.

  • Each program participation within the university counts for three credits with a possibility of nine credits overall.

For this section, you must include:

  • Faculty name
  • Committee name
  • 100-word abstract that describes this program and identifies names, locations, time periods, and benefits
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that documents sample evidence for this project.

7 Innovation

This section is about faculty member projects that devise and implement an idea that decreases the energy consumption of the school, community, nation, or world.

  • Each faculty member with an innovative creative project is worth four credits with a possibility of 16 credits total

To submit this section, you must include:

  • Faculty name
  • Creative work name
  • 100-word abstract that describes project and identifies names, locations, and time periods.
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link that documents the publication for this project.

6 Faculty Credentials

This section of the application is about Faculty Credentials that involve the BEEnow Field Topics. We will split credentials into four different sections:

Awards, Honors, and Prizes

Awards, Honors, and Prizes – Awards, Honors and Prizes that recognize faculty in their excellence in low-energy design in any one of the BEEnow Field Topics.

  • Each award/honor/prize is worth one credit with a possibility of six credits total.
  • For each submission, you must include:
    • Faculty name
    • BEEnow Field Topic covered
    • Name of award/honor/prize
    • A publicly viewable and accessible link to a piece of evidence of award/honor/prize

Advanced Degrees

Faculty member(s) that have earned advanced degrees emphasizing low–energy design.

  • Each award/honor/prize is worth one credit with a possibility of four credits total.
  • Degree must be a M.S and/or Ph.D.
  • For each submission you must include:
    • Faculty name
    • BEEnow Field Topic covered
    • Name of degree
    • Institution where degree was received
    • Year degree was awarded

Professional Affiliations

Faculty member(s) who hold professional affiliations associated with sustainability and low-energy design.

  • Each faculty member with a professional affiliation is worth one credit with a possibility of four credits total
  • For each submission, you must include:
    • Faculty name
    • Professional affiliation

Accreditations

Faculty member(s) with certifications/accreditations in sustainability.

  • Each faculty member with a certification/accreditation is worth one credit with a possibility of four credits total.
  • For each submission, you must include:
    • Faculty name
    • Certification/accreditation

5 Faculty Service

This section of the application on Faculty Service is about ongoing faculty activities involving BEEnow Field Topics that have taken place for at least one full year. We will split these projects into three sections:

Committee Participation

Participation in a permanent committee of faculty members whose mission is to improve sustainability teaching with emphasis on low–energy design, at the department or university level.

Each Committee Member counts for one credit with a possibility of six credits in total.

For each submission you must include:

  • Committee name
  • Faculty chair name
  • List of members
  • 100-word abstract discussing committee charge and projects over the last two years.

Service-Based Activities

Example(s) of service-based activities that requires evident expertise in developing new knowledge, training others, building a community’s capacity to generate their own solutions, and spreading knowledge in accessible and useful ways for the public, which clearly incorporates one or more of the BEEnow Field topics.

Each activity counts for two credits with a possibility of six credits in total.

For each submission you must include:

  • Faculty name
  • BEEnow Field Topic
  • Title of activity
  • 100-word abstract expanding upon the activity with names, locations, time periods, benefits, etc.

Sustainability Lectures

Lectures given by Faculty in institutions other than their own on low-energy design.

Each lecture counts for two credits with a possibility of six credits in total.

For each submission you must include:

  • Faculty name
  • Date of lecture
  • Location of lecture
  • Lecture title
  • Publicly viewable and accessible link to an advertising flyer for the lecture that identifies speaker.
  • A 100-word abstract that gives a synopsis of the lecture.

4 Faculty Scholarship

This section on Faculty Scholarship is about the work involving the BEEnow Field Topics your faculty has done in the past two years.

For each submission, you will need to identify:

  • the faculty member(s) involved in each project.
  • the BEEnow Field Topic practiced within it.

We will split this work into five sections each requiring additional and different information to be submitted:

Funded Research

A faculty-led funded research project that involves qualitative or quantitative methodologies focused on the reduction of energy consumption in any of the BEEnow Field Topics.

Each funded research project is worth two credits with a possibility of 12 credits total.

For each funded research project, it is required to:

  • identify grant name.
  • include a publicly viewable and accessible link to the award letter and the report of the project.
  • A OneDrive link is an example of a publicly viewable and accessible link.

Practice-Integrated Collaboration

A faculty-led practice-integrated activity that engages active projects, professional consultants, and/or clients that involves qualitative or quantitative methodologies focused on the reduction of energy consumption in any of the BEEnow Field Topics.

Each faculty-led practice-integrated activity is worth two credits with a possibility of 12 credits total.

For each of these activities, you must provide:

  • Activity name
  • List of participants
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link to project deliverables
  • A OneDrive link is an example of a publicly viewable and accessible link.

Publications

A faculty-led published piece that utilizes qualitative or quantitative methodologies focused on the reduction of energy consumption in any of the BEEnow Field Topics.

Each published piece submitted is worth 2 credits with a possibility of 12 credits total.

For each publication you must submit:

  • Publication title
  • Journal, book, conference proceeding
  • A publicly viewable and accessible link to a copy of the publication
  • A OneDrive link is an example of a publicly viewable and accessible link.

Professional Practice

Examples of professional practice that draws upon a faculty’s skill and expertise in the significant reduction of energy consumption in any of the BEEnow Field Topics.

Each faculty member involved in sustainable practice counts for one credit with a possibility of four credits total.

For each example of professional practice, you must include:

  • Project name
  • Publicly viewable and accessible documents that indicate:
  • professional practice in the chosen BEEnow Field Topics (reports, research data, designs, etc.) and
  • samples of public recognition.
  • A OneDrive link is an example of a publicly viewable and accessible link.

Creative Work

Creative work that features Faculty exhibits, pavilions, and/or installations that promote an awareness of the value, need and/or impact of energy reductions in any of the BEEnow Field Topics.

Each faculty member involved in creative practice counts for one credit with a possibility of four credits total.

  • For each example of creative work, you must include:
  • Creative work title
  • Publicly viewable and accessible link of a document that indicates creative work in chosen BEEnow Field Topic.
  • A OneDrive link is an example of a publicly viewable and accessible link.
